Introduction

PLC Power-line carrier communication is a communication technology that enables the simultaneous transmission of electrical power and data signals over existing power lines. With advantages such as the elimination of the need for additional cabling, flexible network deployment, and low construction costs, it has become a key communication method for smart grids and the energy internet.

Currently, PLC has given rise to various technical standards, including HPLC, G3‑PLC, and HomePlug Green PHY, to meet the communication requirements of diverse application scenarios.

To address diverse PLC application scenarios, Lika Electric Control has established a product portfolio that encompasses State Grid’s HPLC communication modules and the HomePlug Green PHY communication system for new-energy vehicles, with broad applications in smart meters, concentrators, distribution automation equipment, as well as vehicle‑to‑charger and station‑to‑charger communication systems such as EVCC and SECC.

This paper takes a typical State Grid HPLC communication module as an example,

Analyze the role of PLC coupling transformers in communication links.

01

PCB Functional Area Analysis

Taking a typical State Grid HPLC communication module as an example, the system primarily comprises a coupling network, an PLC coupling transformer, power‑driven MOSFETs, a PLC PHY chip, an MCU control chip, a power‑supply filtering circuit, and an RF test interface.

Among these, the coupling transformer is positioned between the PLC chip and the power line, serving as a critical interface for high-frequency signal transmission.

System Architecture Diagram

In the HPLC system, the MCU handles data processing, while the PLC PHY performs signal modulation and demodulation. After being amplified by the driver circuit, the high-frequency signal is injected into the 220 V power line via a coupling transformer and a coupling network, thereby enabling data communication.

The coupling transformer primarily performs the following functions:

Achieve high-frequency signal coupling and transmission

Provides electrical isolation, enhancing system safety.

Suppress common-mode interference and enhance communication stability.

Optimizing communication performance in conjunction with the peripheral circuitry.

HPLC and G3-PLC Application Scenarios

The following are the application scenarios:

HLC

HPLC It is primarily used in State Grid smart meters, concentrators, and distribution automation systems.

G3-PLC

G3-PLC Widely used in overseas smart grids, AMI systems, and energy management systems.
